Oscar Wilde Facts
Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1854. His mother, Jane Wilde, was an Irish poet and a nationalist. She has a pen name “Speranza.” His father was also known as an author and an ear-eye surgeon. He had a normal life growing up in Ireland with an Irish family. When it came time to go to college he studied at Trinity College in Dublin and shared a room with his brother, Willie Wilde. Wilde was incredibly smart; he was at the top of his class. The explanation of his intelligence is that he had a photogenic memory, famous for recalling long passages in college. Even back in college, he was interested in the concept of aestheticism, which is one reason why he implied it in The Picture of Dorian Gray. After college, he married Constance Lloyd on May 29, 1884 and had two sons, Cyril and Vyvyan. Cyril fought in World War I and died during the Battle of Festubert in France. Vyvyan changed his last name to Holland and became a translator for BBC. After, his father was imprisoned for tried gross indecency with other men for two years. Vyvyan wrote his own biography called Son of Oscar Wilde after the imprisonment of his father. Vyvyan’s son, Merlin Holland, published a biography on Oscar Wilde called A Portrait of Oscar Wilde. After Wilde was released, he adopted the name Sebastian Melmoth. He then died in Paris of Cerebral Meningitis in 1900. Although he was known as an author, he only wrote The Picture of Dorian Gray and other short stories.
