Dorian Gray
Dorian Gray is the main character in the novel. In the beginning of the novel, Dorian is portrayed to be a young, innocent, handsome man. Throughout the novel, he quickly loses his innocent persona. Dorian Gray, who is initially corrupted by Lord Henry, does not realize that the painting that Basil did of him had in turn cursed him when he wished to always keep the youthfulness of the portrait. Dorian starts to show that he is corrupted when he shows little empathy for Sibyl Vane’s death, kills his best friend Basil Hallward, and ultimately transitions from a sweet and innocent young man to a ruthless and self-absorbed narcissist.
Basil Hallward
Basil is known as a talented painter. He is the one that created the famous picture of Dorian Gray. His affection for Dorian changes the way he views art. After he painted Dorian as hid true self, he claims he has put too much of himself into the painting which portrays his deep admiration for Dorian. Later, he changes into thinking that art is useless and is composed of only form and color, however his emotional feelings toward this painting of Dorian remains the same. Basil has constructed his dedication and adoration for Dorian into his painting, as if secretly constructing his soul. Even though Basil was truly committed to Dorian, in the end, it all goes to waste with the murder of Basil. Basil was the only person that has deep love for Dorian and his care for Dorian’s safety.
